Wolf Spider
Wolf spiders will inject venom freely if continually provoked. Symptoms of their venomous bite include swelling, mild pain and itching. Some South American and Australian species have also been associated with necrotic wounds.

  • Wolf spiders possess excellent eyesight. They also possess an acute sense of touch. This is especially helpful because wolf spiders are nocturnal and will be out hunting at night. Wolf spiders are solitary hunters.
  • They are unique in the way that they carry their eggs. The egg sac is attached to the spinnerets at the end of the abdomen, allowing the spider to carry her unborn young on her back. The abdomen is held in a raised position to keep the egg case from dragging on the ground; however, they are still capable of hunting.
  • Mating occurs in the autumn, and the males die before the onset of winter. The fertilized females overwinter, and produce egg cocoons the following May or June.
  • Wolf spiders can be found in a wide range of habitats, including: woodland, wet coastal forest, alpine meadows, and suburban gardens. Most are wanderers without permanent homes. Some build burrows which can be left open or have a trapdoor (depending on species).
